My Approach to Mentorship

My Approach to Mentorship

Great design leaders don’t just manage, they mentor. Management is about resourcing, deadlines, and delivery. Mentorship is about unlocking confidence, curiosity, and ownership so designers don’t just execute, they grow. The difference matters, because while management maintains velocity, mentorship compounds it. Teams that are mentored become teams that mentor each other.

Mentorship in Practice

At International Motors, I built onboarding and growth frameworks that helped team members feel anchored from day one. A clear “How We Work” playbook, paired with role-play exercises and collaborative rituals, gave new hires not just tools, but context and confidence. Beyond process, mentorship meant carving out space for coaching, feedback, and real talk about challenges, normalizing the idea that learning curves are part of the work. The payoff was trust: the team felt empowered, engaged and confident.

Lessons from Teaching

My time teaching with Thinkful (Chegg) reinforced that mentorship is a two-way street. I guided students through the foundations of UX, but I also learned how to flex my style for different learning needs, when to push, when to step back, and when to simply listen. Some of those students now work in roles where they’re mentoring others, proof that the cycle of growth multiplies when you invest in people early.

Culture That Lasts

Mentorship doesn’t just elevate individuals, it reshapes culture. When designers feel safe to explore and take risks, retention goes up, collaboration gets easier, and the team starts scaling itself. The designers I’ve mentored have gone on to lead workshops, propose bold design directions, and even challenge leadership with confidence. That’s the real ROI: teams that don’t just deliver outputs, but continuously expand what’s possible together.

You invest in people—not just pixels—so teams can build each other as much as they build the work.
